This headline is very misleading…
To be clear, I think what happened at the Capitol on Jan 6 was a riot. And I have no problem with rioters being arrested. I said the same thing about the riots in Minneapolis, Seattle, Portland, Chicago, New York, and even my beloved Indianapolis - where people had weapons, engaged in physical assaults of police and destroyed property.
I believe that riots need to be stopped. But this headline is saying that people who were carrying things legally are somehow bad people who wanted to engage in an overthrow of government. That’s not the case if they never entered the capital, never attacked anybody and never tried to hurt anyone.
Don’t get me wrong. You can argue that it’s weird, or strange, or odd, or peculiar that people would show up with weapons to Washington DC. And you can also argue that in Washington DC, many of those things may be illegal to have there in the capital. That’s a conversation about whether or not it somehow should be against the law to carry a firearm in all 50 states and in the District of Columbia, which I believe should not be against the law.
If people were standing outside of where they were screening people and doing metal detector checks, then what’s the problem? That they had lawful weapons on them?
The inference in this article, from of all places, the New York Post, is that those people were there to do harm. But, if they never entered the capital, never got into a fight with police, never drew their weapon, never engage in a fight, then what exactly is the issue?
If someone is lawfully carrying a weapon, they are not a criminal. Those who engage in criminal activity are criminals. That’s the difference.
And if you believe the criminality is entering DC with a lawful weapon, why is not criminality when someone from a Central American nation enters the country illegally?
I don’t condone rioting. I’m not about to start. But people in the US are often armed. Many carry a gun. Many carry knives. Many carry pepper spray (including my wife.)
That is not criminal. The Jan 6 Committee is trying to say it is. I disagree.
What do you say?
